The Wezmore Project: Inspiring Families to Reboot Their Thinking

By Alicia Wanek

As Eddie Coker observes, “Life just unfolds as it does,” a sentiment that 2020 has vividly illustrated. Nonetheless, this artist is determined to prepare everyone to tackle life’s hurdles. In collaboration with the Wezmore Project team, he has created a comprehensive initiative aimed particularly at empowering children to confront life’s dilemmas head-on. Their objective is clear: “to assist young people and their families in navigating the intricate landscape of emotional experiences using practical skills and advice communicated via various engaging media.”

If you were parenting in North Texas during the early 2000s, Eddie Coker likely resonates with you. Renowned for his vibrant, kid-oriented songs and high-energy performances that could tire out even the most energetic parent just watching, Eddie built a loyal fanbase at festivals, shopping malls, and outdoor gatherings. Now residing in Colorado, his energy remains unmatched, and he has further broadened his outreach through the Wezmore Project, which he affectionately dubs “Eddie Coker 4.0.”

The term Wezmore originated from a playful concept his son created back in elementary school. When copyright issues prevented Eddie from choosing another title for his budding nonprofit, he decided to recontextualize this whimsical word. He emphasizes to his team and audiences that “there’s a WE in Wezmore,” reflecting the idea that we are not alone in life’s journey; the project encourages kids to concentrate on the “Wezzers” – love, joy, and fulfillment. The term “wez” has evolved into a verb, symbolizing the act of incorporating Wezmore’s strategies into daily life. Enthusiasts can even purchase Wezmore merchandise through the Wezmart.

The foundation of Wezmore arises from alarming statistics concerning mental health challenges among today’s youth.

The project’s website highlights significant data: around 157,000 youths aged 10 to 24 visit emergency rooms for self-inflicted injuries in the U.S.; the CDC identifies suicide as the second-leading cause of death in this age group, claiming about 4,600 lives annually; and 17% of American students report being bullied multiple times per month within a school term.

Motivated by these pressing issues, Eddie declared, “I’m going to contribute my part to address our human struggles,” thus channeling his creativity and musical talents to aid kids in coping.

Eddie employs what he refers to as “short, joyful interruptions and interactive exercises that inspire kids to embrace the present and cultivate mindfulness.” Through social media platforms, live broadcasts, videos, and Eddie’s live performances, Wezmore encourages children to “engage with the moment in a way that fosters greater joy.” This philosophy underpins their initiatives, with tools developed on a scientific basis that have received validation from the SMU Center on Research and Evaluation. Eddie expresses delight in envisioning a child affirming to themselves, “Wait, I have something for this,” whether it’s a lesson from a song, a meditation, a message, or a visual cue to handle their feelings or circumstances.

He guides children to realize “At the heart of it all is the concept of choice,” asserting that learning to “catch” negative thoughts allows them to maintain control.

The program isn’t exclusively tailored for younger audiences. As Eddie speaks to older groups, he finds that introducing his work with the phrase, “This is what I do for young kids…” tends to break the ice and makes everyone more receptive to the Wezmore teachings. Ultimately, we all benefit from acquiring a few more life skills to, as the organization puts it, “Lovemore, Peacemore, Joymore, Wezmore.” As we move beyond the challenges of 2020, may these essential skills continue to thrive.
