How can we maintain a sense of optimism during such difficult times?
Every day presents us with an array of challenges, be they situational, physical, or emotional. We witness the devastating impacts of the Coronavirus on individuals’ health. Our hearts ache for those who have lost their jobs unexpectedly. We observe our economy crumbling in a matter of days. Amidst all this turmoil, it can feel as though hope is lost. However, now is precisely when we must delve deep and hold on to hope more fiercely than ever. It’s crucial for our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being, not only for ourselves but also for those around us.
As we grapple with feelings of fear, anxiety, and concern stemming from the state of the world, we must focus on what we can control: striving for our peace and nurturing our hope.
Here’s what a hopeful day might look like in these times:
- Mindset
Consider the first five minutes of your day. What thoughts cross your mind upon waking?
Should I turn on the news?
Need to check my messages?
I hope my kids had a good sleep last night?
Where did I put the remote?
Make a conscious effort to set your mental direction for the day with an optimistic outlook. Instead of letting negative thoughts dominate, replace them with this empowering sentence: I believe today will be a day filled with life and positivity.
These initial moments shape the tone for your entire day. Even when faced with challenging circumstances, choose to hold on to hope.
A positive mindset fosters hope.
- Physical Activity
Engaging in exercise early in the day can be a great way to alleviate stress, sort through your thoughts, and kick-start your endorphins. This practice may also help you make healthier dietary choices throughout the day. When you relieve physical stress, it becomes easier to keep a hopeful attitude.
Prioritizing self-care cultivates hope.
- Gratitude, Gifts, and Grace
Challenge yourself to recognize everything you are thankful for, acknowledge the gifts you possess, and embrace the grace in your life.
Throughout your day, take note of what you appreciate—whether it’s functioning appliances or the chance to spend quality time with your children.
Recognize the natural strengths and gifts you possess—from leadership to creativity—and aim to utilize them during this period. (Check out 16personalities.com for insights.)
Welcome the grace that life provides you, from the ability to forgive to the capacity to love and support others.
Embracing gratitude, your inherent gifts, and a life steeped in grace creates hope.
- Perspective
It can be easy to adopt the narratives pushed by media, authorities, or those around us. If you find yourself overwhelmed with anxiety or negativity, take a step back and strive to regain a hopeful perspective. Remind yourself that this will eventually pass. Tomorrow is another opportunity. You will be alright, and everything will be fine. This period is an opportunity for learning and personal growth rather than being overwhelmed by fear.
A balanced perspective nurtures hope for what lies ahead.
- Embrace Playfulness
In times of stress, it’s easy to forget the importance of enjoying life. Make time in your day for play—be silly, dance, and laugh. Reconnect with your inner child, the one who ran freely and didn’t worry about being watched. Rediscover the joy in simple activities like crafts, puzzles, or baking.
A playful spirit not only encourages enjoyment but also encourages hope.
