I recently completed reading A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. The narrative follows a man’s journey through the chaotic backdrop of 20th-century Russia, filled with profound philosophical insights articulated so beautifully that they compel you to read them aloud, even sharing them with anyone nearby. The protagonist faces a significant life change but discovers joy in friendships, history, fine wine, and fatherhood. My book club collectively adored this elegantly written story that weaves together themes of honor, intellect, and bravery, complemented by a touch of humor that makes it a thoroughly engaging experience.
One of the passages that resonates with me is when Towles states, “our lives are steered by uncertainties, many of which are disruptive or even daunting; but that if we persevere and remain generous at heart, we may be granted a moment of lucidity – a moment in which all that has happened to us suddenly comes into focus as a necessary course of events, even as we find ourselves on the threshold of a bold new life that we have been meant to lead all along.”
I have often conveyed this idea to my children, who are now young adults. Life holds no guarantees, and the pursuit of happiness is riddled with not just curves but also numerous obstacles, barriers, and stop signs. By the time they graduated from high school, they had encountered more than their fair share of difficulties; however, experiencing deep sorrow encourages open conversations, allowing us to explore our feelings, learn resilience, and commit to living with greater intention. I am continually impressed not only by their unique strengths but also by their ability to forge ahead despite unavoidable challenges, setbacks, and losses. With an outlook forged by persistence, bravery, kindness, and a generous pinch of humor, they are sure to embark on a rich and fulfilling journey. I take immense pride in who they ARE and look forward to who they will BECOME.

Editors note: I penned this column last month, before the pandemic altered our world. In retrospect, it feels almost haunting how unpredictable life is and the importance of guiding our children—and each other—through these challenging times. I wish us all smooth sailing.
