Plan Ahead, Stay Flexible

The significance of perseverance in our lives is widely acknowledged. The drive to achieve, an unwavering focus on our objectives, and a strong resolve to continue despite challenges, setbacks, or opposition are admirable qualities. However, there comes a moment when adhering to our initial plan might not yield the desired results. This is where the concept of “The Pivot” plays a crucial role.

Pivoting involves the ability to recognize that the path we’ve dedicated considerable time and effort to is no longer the right one. Similar to a basketball maneuver where a player steps forward with one foot while keeping the other foot planted, pivoting is vital in navigating life’s challenges. This approach enables us to remain grounded in our prior experiences while making necessary adjustments to reach our goals successfully.

The act of pivoting demands deep reflection, courage, and determination. Often, we hesitate to pivot due to fears of being perceived as indecisive, giving up, or failing by those close to us. Nonetheless, it’s important to accept that our initial strategy, which seemed sound at the start, may need to be reevaluated. Adjusting our plans while maintaining our focus on the desired outcome encourages personal growth and learning. Thus, alongside determination, let’s cultivate adaptability as an essential quality for our children.

I have always found perseverance to be more natural than the ability to pivot. I have strong convictions and have long held the belief that sheer hard work would lead to positive outcomes. However, I’ve taught my children—now 18, 20, and 21—to plan ahead yet remain flexible in their approach. I explain to them that while perseverance is commendable, being rigid is not advantageous. I encourage them to be resilient, confident, and steadfast, but also to regularly reassess their strategies. This year, I’m committing to applying this principle to my own life and embracing “The Pivot.” I am eager to see how this change will positively impact my personal and professional journey.
