DART Celebrates Young Artists in Student Art Contest

By Tricia White

On Saturday, May 8, the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) honored the achievements of young local artists during the DART Student Art Contest Awards Ceremony held at the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA).

The title of Best of Show was awarded to Collin Chon, a 5th grader from Greenhill School in Addison. His artwork, inspired by the theme “Everyday Heroes Ride DART,” was chosen from an impressive pool of 688 submissions from students ranging from kindergarten through 12th grade. The theme acknowledged the various forms of heroism and provided young artists with a platform to recognize those everyday individuals who have positively influenced the community during the pandemic.

The DART Student Art Contest has been a cherished tradition for 23 years, encouraging the use of public transportation and benefiting from the support of community partners such as the Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas Contemporary, and Half Price Books. Additionally, media partners including Al Día, Dallas Morning News, DFW Child, DFW Kids Directory, Local Profile, NBC 5, and Telemundo 39 have also contributed to this initiative.

The winning artworks will be showcased across DART rail stations, buses, and trains, in addition to exhibitions at the Dallas Museum of Art, Love Field Airport, and on DART’s official website, DART.org.
