AWARE Reveals 2017

Save the date for the annual gala, AWARE Affair: Celebrate the Moments, taking place on Friday, April 13, 2018.

Venise Stuart, the president of AWARE, has revealed the recipients of this year’s grants for 2017 – 2018. A number of nonprofit organizations from Dallas and Collin County submitted applications, all engaged in frontline efforts against Alzheimer’s disease. The chosen grant recipients are:

  • Baylor Health Care System Foundation – Funding for the salary of a Ph.D. Neuropsychology Intern at the Baylor AT&T Memory Center.
  • Center for BrainHealth – Discovery Group – Financial support for the Discovery Group, a program focused on helping individuals and families impacted by Alzheimer’s and related dementias to maintain abilities and leverage strengths to encourage meaningful participation and slow disease progression.
  • Dallas Museum of Art – Memory Moments – Funding for staffing, supplies, and honorariums to facilitate Memory Moments, a program that allows participants with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias to engage in meaningful and restorative art experiences.
  • Jewish Family Service – Support for the salary of a Clinical Social Worker who will offer independent living services to adults with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers.
  • Juliette Fowler Communities – Funding for group and individual therapy sessions with a Certified Music Therapist, as well as to acquire additional instruments and therapeutic materials for memory care residents.
  • NorthPark Presbyterian Church – Casa de Vida – Financial support for the Casa de Vida program, which assists families/caregivers by offering personalized care for individuals with Alzheimer’s and related dementias, featuring art, music, games, and lunch one day a week from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM.
  • Texas Winds Musical Outreach – Funding for two concerts by professional musicians in 87 nursing homes and adult daycare centers serving individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and associated dementias.
  • Presbyterian Communities & Services Foundation – Broad Strokes – Support for the Broad Strokes program at Grace Presbyterian Village, providing residents facing Alzheimer’s and related dementias with music and art therapy.
  • The Senior Source – Senior Companions – Support for the Senior Companion Program, which connects volunteers with individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s and related dementias, providing assistance with meals, light housekeeping, and companionship.
  • UT Southwestern Medical Center – Funding to support Dr. Roger Rosenberg’s research and clinical trials focused on a DNA vaccine aimed at clearing amyloid plaques in the brain to potentially prevent or slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

The recipients of the Myrna D. Schlegel AWARE Scholarship Fund includeNora Drutz-Rogney, who is enrolled at Baylor University, andLindsay Ross, who will be attending Texas Christian University in Fall 2017.
AWARE is committed to combating Alzheimer’s disease by providing support and funding to nonprofit organizations on the front lines in Dallas and the surrounding North Texas area. Applications for the AWARE fund were invited through the Dallas Foundation’s Field of Interest grant program, with AWARE selecting exemplary groups that deliver services, educational programs, and resources for those affected by Alzheimer’s and for those researching a potential cure.

The funding for these grants partially comes from the annual fundraising event, AWARE Affair: Celebrate the Moments, scheduled for Friday, April 13, 2018. Additional details will be provided soon. This gala will include a live and silent auction, a three-course dinner, and dancing.
