Pro Football Hall of Famer Tony Dorsett has faced numerous challenges throughout his life, yet he consistently prioritizes his family and community.
The narrative of Tony Dorsett is familiar even to those with only a slight interest in professional football. Growing up in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh, he made significant strides in the NCAA record books during his time at the University of Pittsburgh. As the second overall selection in the 1977 NFL draft, he carved his legacy with the Dallas Cowboys. Dorsett is among a select few who have achieved the Heisman Trophy, Super Bowl victory, College National Championship, as well as induction into both the College Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Nevertheless, his contributions off the field are what have led him to receive our VIP Award.
Balancing the demands of a professional career with family commitments has been a significant focus for Dorsett. His son, Anthony, followed suit, playing safety at the University of Pittsburgh before enjoying an eight-season NFL career. His eldest daughter, Jazmyn, plays basketball at Oklahoma State University, while his younger daughters, Madison, 15, and Mia, 10, add an active dynamic to his life. Dorsett is dedicated to volunteer efforts across various charities, such as organizing his annual Tony Dorsett Memorial Celebrity Golf Classic, which supports the McGuire Memorial Home in New Brighton, PA. He champions several non-profit initiatives and raises awareness on health topics concerning former athletes, exemplifying personal integrity and devoted service.
In 2013, Dorsett revealed that he had been diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain condition commonly found among retired athletes. Although the full impact of his diagnosis remains unclear, he has acknowledged memory loss as a prevalent symptom. By being open about his health struggles and prognosis, Dorsett has highlighted the condition, galvanizing research efforts toward treatment and a potential cure. For his meaningful contributions to the community and the exemplary role he embodies as a parent and mentor, Good Family Life Magazine proudly presents the inaugural VIP Award to Tony Dorsett.
“Choosing Tony for this accolade was one of the most straightforward decisions I could make,” said the editor. “He is known for his quote, ‘to succeed you need to find something to hold on to, something to motivate you, something to inspire you,’ which truly reflects who he is. He is confronting CTE with the same indomitable spirit that propelled him through NFL history with that ninety-nine yard run for America’s Team. His passion for his wife, Janet, his children, his community, his charitable work, and his fans is palpable. Tony is a legend, a leader, and an inspiration to many—plus, he has the brightest smile!” – Pidgeon, Editor-In-Chief, Themerrythought
“Tony epitomized professionalism. He performed his responsibilities exceptionally well and was always eager to take charge in challenging moments. He maximized every ounce of talent bestowed upon him by God and never backed down. Such characteristics are often attributed to athletes, yet they also illustrate how he has led his life as a former star, a father, and as he confronts current health challenges. If there were ‘Halls of Fame’ for various life categories, Tony would surely be inducted into numerous ones.”
