The development of Watters Creek was rooted in sustainable practices that showcase the natural beauty of the area. While the greenery of Watters Creek is visually appealing, the initiative extends to eco-conscious designs throughout the shopping center. Its commitment to sustainability earned it recognition as the first retail space in Texas to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
In conjunction with recycling initiatives and the use of recycled construction materials, Watters Creek has adopted several innovative sustainability strategies. For instance, vertical construction of buildings and parking garages maximizes land efficiency. The center utilizes well water for its pond, creek, and irrigation systems, and water-saving plumbing fixtures reportedly conserve about 1,000 gallons daily. Additionally, ozone-friendly air conditioning systems are in operation, and visitors can refill water bottles with natural spring water at the Reuse-Refill-Refresh Station. The shopping center also employs advanced insulation materials and reflective rooftops to enhance energy efficiency, with estimates suggesting enough annual energy savings to power 30 homes for a year.
Tree conservation efforts are abundantly visible as well. Out of the 500 trees planted at Watters Creek, over 25 mature trees were relocated from local projects. Moreover, a 150-year-old pecan tree near the pond has received historical designation from the City of Allen.
Watters Creek not only focuses on environmental stewardship but also embraces social responsibility. While parking is complimentary in the retail center’s three garages, all revenues generated from metered street parking are donated to local charities through the Change for Charity initiative, funding various community events hosted at Watters Creek.
