Nurturing Community Connections Through Basketball

By Alicia Wanek

Sports have the unique power to unite individuals. Whether you’re an athlete or a spectator, participating in a game can transform free time into an exhilarating experience. For those who have attended a Texas Legends game, it’s a memorable outing for the entire family. The Legends aim to foster community spirit in an enjoyable atmosphere, which is why they collaborate with Texas Legends Care (TLC), a charitable organization dedicated to extending this joyful experience to every child and family they assist.

Founded in 2012, TLC is “focused on nurturing relationships within the community to create a meaningful, enduring impact…” According to Executive Director Samantha Matthews, this initiative embodies the “spirit and commitment to giving back” that has been the foundation of the Legends since their inception. Donnie Nelson, General Manager and President of Basketball Operations for the Dallas Mavericks (the parent team of the Legends), and a TLC board member, states, “The Texas Legends were created to support those in need and honor those who serve. Texas Legends Care serves as the vehicle for that mission.”

Support manifests through a diverse range of outreach programs. The Marques Haynes Scholarship Fund offers scholarships for children to participate in sports camps hosted at the Texas Legends venue, often providing them with the chance to interact with team players. Samantha observes the profound impact this initiative has on the lives of children who may not have otherwise had such opportunities. “We maintain that all children, regardless of their economic background, deserve access to pursue their passions. Sports cultivate character, teamwork, and promote a healthy and active lifestyle,” she asserts.

Through its Legendary Kids Program, the organization enables youth and families from economically disadvantaged neighborhoods, referred by local nonprofits and schools, to attend Legends games. For many of these children, these events are truly unique experiences. An administrator from Arturo Salazar Elementary in Dallas expressed gratitude for the Texas Legends Care initiative, stating, “Some of our students have never participated in this type of event, with many having never left Oak Cliff. Attending a Texas Legends game significantly broadens their horizons. The Legends bus initiative supports our students’ social and emotional development, offering hands-on learning experiences and enriching many academic concepts.”

Throughout the season, the team collaborates with 24 local nonprofits, honoring one at each home game. TLC proudly teams up with Raytheon to provide tickets for active and former military personnel and their families at every home game, while their partnership with Home Depot facilitates the recognition of a local hero at each event.

Samantha hopes to strengthen the connections they’ve built, particularly with the Boys & Girls Club and Dallas ISD schools, to further their impact. She emphasizes, “It’s crucial for children to have access to and participate in community events that extend beyond their neighborhoods.” This endeavor transcends basketball, yet the journey is filled with joy and excitement.
