The Greater Dallas Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) is set to present the 33rd annual luncheon titled “Stories Worth Telling” on Friday, November 9, 2018, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This event honors Dallas’ National Philanthropy Day, bringing together a multitude of local nonprofits, volunteers, donors, foundations, businesses, and community members to recognize the selfless contributions of individuals supporting various important causes. The luncheon will take place at the Hyatt Regency Dallas in the Reunion Ballroom.

Rodney D. Bullard, Vice President of Community Affairs at Chick-fil-A, Inc. and Executive Director of the Chick-fil-A Foundation, will be the guest speaker at this year’s event. Bullard is also the author of the book “Heroes Wanted: Why the World Needs You to Live Your Heart Out.” The luncheon is proudly presented by South Texas Money Management (STMM).

“The citizens of Dallas are passionate, dedicated, and generous, but these qualities alone are not sufficient,” stated Jeanie Wyatt, CFA, founder and CEO of STMM. “Our nonprofits are crucial in addressing many fundamental needs in our community. With over a thousand nonprofits in Dallas, it’s essential to have a dedicated organization such as AFP that can assist fundraising professionals in enhancing their fundraising efforts and ensure they operate ethically and effectively.”

Luncheon Chair William Bryant is excited to announce the 2018 award recipients:

Outstanding Philanthropist Jack Furst, nominated by the Boy Scouts of America, contributes his time, resources, and expertise with unwavering commitment to enhancing the world. Furst holds a philosophy that confidence fosters progress, and with progress, anything can be achieved. He has a visionary mindset, often spearheading transformative youth-oriented initiatives. His projects include leading efforts to establish a home for the National Scout Jamboree, raising over $400 million for the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia, and initiating a $90 million campaign for the Circle Ten Council. His extensive support extends to many organizations, including multiple educational and community initiatives, further highlighting his dedication to philanthropy.

“Jack Furst embodies the essence of a true philanthropist, leading with integrity and sharing his remarkable experiences and resources to make a significant difference in the community,” expressed Bobby B Lyle.

Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Kaki Hopkins, nominated by the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, is a steadfast volunteer with nearly four decades of service across more than 14 organizations, often chairing significant events. Her efforts in fundraising have helped amass millions for various initiatives, and she has held several board roles that reflect her impactful leadership. Notable organizations benefiting from her involvement include the Dallas Opera and the Dallas Arboretum. Hopkins is recognized for her commitment to building strong teams and for her innovative contributions to fundraising events.

“Kaki consistently initiates improvements and exceeds every project’s goals, ensuring the organizations she represents shine,” commented Sarah Warnecke, a community volunteer.

Outstanding Foundation: the Joe M. and Doris R. Dealey Family Foundation, nominated by Texas Health Resources, was established to honor the late Joe and Doris Dealey and continues to support a myriad of community initiatives. The foundation has significantly contributed to health resources, education, and historical preservation through its financial gifts and challenge grants. The legacy and ongoing philanthropy of the Dealey family is commemorated through various initiatives that foster community development.

“The Dealey Foundation serves as a cornerstone in preserving the values and history of our city, actively supporting health and education initiatives,” highlighted Brent Christopher, president of the Children’s Medical Center Foundation.

Outstanding Corporation: Pioneer Natural Resources, nominated by Dallas CASA and Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity, exemplifies a corporate commitment to community enhancement and educational success. Its longstanding support of Dallas CASA has made a significant impact on the lives of many children. Pioneer encourages employee engagement through philanthropy and volunteerism and has played a crucial role in the success of various community projects.

“Pioneer Natural Resources showcases a powerful model for how corporate leadership can inspire community involvement and support meaningful causes,” said David Crawford, CEO of Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity.

Outstanding Fundraising Executive Luanne Samuel, CFRE, nominated by Jana Haigood from the Alcuin School, boasts over 24 years of fundraising prowess. Her diverse experience has seen her hold prominent roles in various organizations that have resulted in raising nearly $80 million in support of vital community initiatives. Samuel is recognized for her mentoring efforts and commitment to enhancing fundraising practices through professional involvement.

“Luanne empowers organizations to sustain future giving, establishing crucial scholarships and engaging broader donor bases,” noted Jana Haigood.

Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy: the Jingle Bell Mistletoe team, nominated by The North Texas Food Bank, has successfully delivered nearly 300,000 nutritious meals to local families through their unique mistletoe sales initiative. This endeavor, which began in response to Hurricane Sandy, has grown to secure significant funding for the food bank, highlighting how young individuals can mobilize to combat hunger and inspire others to give back.

“These remarkable young leaders demonstrate how determination and creativity can effect change, and they serve as a testament to the power of youth philanthropy,” remarked Jeffrey King, associate director of individual giving at NTFB.

The Greater Dallas Chapter of AFP has celebrated National Philanthropy Day since 1981, and the luncheon is attended by over 500 individuals, including AFP members and influential community figures. This day honors the impactful work of philanthropy and those dedicated to the philanthropic process. AFP chapters involve over 28,000 members worldwide in recognizing this important occasion annually.
