From Family Stress to Family Success

By Professor Jeff Willie | Contributor

The COVID-19 pandemic, alongside the resurgence of racial tensions across the United States, has created an unprecedented level of stress in households nationwide. Many individuals, particularly those unaccustomed to a remote work setting, faced challenges with the transition to continuous virtual meetings. The incessant demands of online interactions can elevate stress levels, potentially leading to burnout if not addressed properly. On top of this, parents have had to ensure that their school-aged children keep up with remote learning, a task that consumes significant time and focus during typical work hours, all while trying to comprehend the complexities surrounding racial issues in our society.

This period has undoubtedly been overwhelming, especially for children feeling the absence of social interactions, from missed hangouts with friends to postponed milestones like proms and graduations. Attempting to foster a structured routine, while giving them freedom to connect with peers, can be daunting, as the effects of stress are evident in their behaviors.

A DISC assessment can serve as a valuable resource for parents to identify stress-related behaviors in their children, as well as strategies to alleviate these pressures. This assessment reveals strengths, communication preferences, learning styles, and reactions to stress and conflict, equipping parents with tools for enhancing their interactions. During my seminars titled “Family Stressed to Family Best,” I discuss observable behavior traits indicative of stress, areas where children excel, and effective ways to connect with them through affirmations that highlight their unique talents.

For instance, if a child shows strong leadership skills, decisiveness, and a knack for problem-solving, they likely possess “D” (Dominance) characteristics. Under stress, these traits may manifest as defiance, controlling behaviors, and frustration. As caregivers, it is crucial to recognize and positively reinforce their strengths through encouraging affirmations such as: (1) I admire your self-confidence, (2) I appreciate your determination, and (3) I value your commitment to your goals.

If your child is sociable, creative, and enthusiastic—traits associated with “I” (Influence)—they may thrive on interaction and encouragement. Stress could be reflected in hyperactivity or emotional outbursts. The key is to give them room to express themselves while celebrating their qualities with comments like: (1) I enjoy your playful spirit, (2) I appreciate how friendly you are, and (3) your enthusiasm is uplifting.

In contrast, “S” (Steadiness) children are often dependable and thoughtful. The challenges of the current situation may lead to increased stress, exhibiting as indecision or withdrawal. To alleviate their stress, show them that their contributions are valued and encourage their growth with affirmations such as: (1) I appreciate your caring nature, (2) I value how you try to maintain harmony, and (3) I like how compassionate you are.

Lastly, children exhibiting “C” (Conscientiousness) traits are detail-oriented and analytical but may become critical and withdrawn under pressure. Engaging them through inquiries and fostering their analytical tendencies can ease their stress, while affirmations like: (1) I admire your commitment to excellence, (2) I appreciate your organizational skills, and (3) you are a great listener can further connect you with them.

Adaptation is never easy, particularly with extensive changes brought by COVID-19, including shifts to learning environments and cancellations of cherished traditions. It is vital to acknowledge these challenges openly. Utilizing the DISC assessment can aid parents in addressing these additional stressors and support their children effectively.
